According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes is unlikely to join Championship rivals Wigan Athletic this month after claiming any deal would be ‘very difficult’ to make due to the demands on the table.
What’s the word?
Over the weekend, the 29-year-old was linked to the Latics by Football Insider with the side wanting to clinch him on loan for the remainder of the season.
Nixon was subsequently asked about this on Twitter and offered a series of replies over the likelihood of any deal. He first hinted that Rhodes’ wages were an issue as well as other clubs’ interest in him…
The journalist then claimed that Wigan would find it ‘very difficult’ to meet the demands of the Owls, to which he added were rather ‘expensive’…
Set to stay?
It seems increasingly likely that Wednesday’s club-record signing is to remain at Hillsborough past this month as clubs could well be priced out of a move for the striker.
Football Insider also revealed last month that manager Garry Monk would reject any advances for him with Scottish giants Celtic lurking around and they believe that his stance still hasn’t changed.
However, the 40-year-old has inherited a squad full of attacking numbers with there being as many as four other options in the striking department, including Steven Fletcher, Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu and Fernando Forestieri.
If he is to strengthen his side this month, at least one or two of these names will need to be shifted on with the Daily Mail stating that Monk has a very ‘tight’ budget to operate with earlier this week.
Rhodes bagged a hattrick in just his second start of the season but is yet to build on that in four league matches, via Transfermarkt.
