Aston Villa have sacked manager Roberto Di Matteo.
The Villans appointed the former Champions League winner in the summer, following their relegation to the Championship at the end of last season.
He was charged with the task of getting the Birmingham outfit back to the Premier League at the first time of asking and new owner Tony Xia allowed him to spend in excess of £50million during the summer transfer window.
But Di Matteo won just one of his twelve fixtures in charge at Villa Park – a 3-0 win over bottom-placed Rotherham – and has now been relieved of his managerial duties.
Assistant Steve Clarke, who has previously held down manager positions at West Bromwich Albion and Reading, has been put in charge on a caretaker basis.
It’s fair to say, opinion on the sacking is relatively divided. Whilst some believe Villa made the right call, others claim no manager can turn the sinking ship around.
